There is a Latin phrase used in theatre, “Deus Ex Machina.” In classical drama, it referred to the introduction of God into the action of a play to resolve a problem. Euripides had a rule for using God in the drama. He said that God must never be introduced as a Deus Ex Machina unless the characters had gotten themselves into such a problem that only God could solve it. It had to be a dilemma that only God could get them out of.

Deus Ex Machina is the literary term that refers to a character or event that seems to exist just to effortlessly solve a problem that seems unsolvable. This character is almost “divine,” and the way that the problem is solved could be called “divine intervention.”

Some people criticize the use of deus ex machina as being unrealistic, and therefore, weak. However, deus ex machina is often used in fairy tales or fantasy, which are unrealistic in nature.

Examples of Deus Ex Machina:

1. Cinderella’s fairy godmother comes and solves all of her problems by magically creating a dress, coach, and servants so that Cinderella can go to the ball.

2. Pinocchio’s blue fairy rescues him several times during the course of the story.

3. Gandalf seems to return from the dead just when Frodo needs him so that he can survive and continue his journey with the ring.

4. In the ancient Greek myth about Jason and Medea, the sun god sends a chariot to take Medea way from her husband and back to her home in Athens.

5. Prince Charming and his enchanted kiss seems to save the day in Sleeping Beauty.

6. In Beauty and the Beast, the beast seems to have died, but Belle’s love saves the day and he returns to life.

7. In The Lord of the Flies, the boys are suddenly rescued by a passing ship.

Euripides and Deus ex Machina
~When the gods have something to say about it~

This Latin phrase originally described an ancient plot device used in Greek and Roman theatre. Many tragedy writers used Deus ex Machina to resolve complicated or even seemingly hopeless situations in the plots of their plays. The phrase is loosely translated as “god from the machine.” This translation refers to how the Deus ex Machina was often performed in ancient theatre. An actor playing a god or goddess would be lowered on stage by a “mechane” which was the name of the crane device used.

Diagram of “machene”

The above diagram depicts the mechanics of the “mechane”. This device was the crane that the Greeks used in their theatre mostly in the fifth and fourth centuries BC. The “mechane” was composed of wooden beams and used a pulley system to pick up an actor into the air and elevate them above the stage to simulate flight. Mostly this device was used for Deus ex Machina purposes, but there were a few instances of using the machine to introduce other non-divine characters as in Euripides’ “Medea.”

The term Deus ex Machina is still used today, however, it has taken on a broader meaning. Deus ex Machina is now the phrase used to describe any situation where something unexpected or implausible is brought in to the story line to resolve situations or disentangle a plot. The resolution could come from a new character, device, or event. The definition of this phrase has also been stretched to include any story resolutions that are not drawn directly or logically from the preceding plot and defy even the broad concept of suspension of disbelief. The new and broader definition of Deus ex Machina helps authors of such modern works to end their stories with improbable but more acceptable conclusions.

A well-used example of this is the “it was all a dream” or “it was all in his/her head” plot:

In ancient theatre, it was a god or goddess that was introduced. Normally, a member of what was referred to as the Olympian twelve: Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter, Apollo, Artemis, Athena, Ares, Aphrodite, Hermes, Hephaestus. Dionysus, and sometimes Hestia.Wizard of Oz movie poster

Euripides was the most notable user of the Deus ex Machina. He included this plot device in many of his plays. Many scholars believe that he was the first to pioneer the concept. Euripides’ had an almost notorious reputation for trying new ideas in the tragedy genre. For instance he wrote his plays in a manner that rendered the chorus independent from the primary action of the drama and he used explanatory prologues to explain what happened preceding the play and may have outlined events to come. His unconventional and revolutionary ideas that toyed even with the traditional structure of the tragedy garnered Euripides a lot of criticism. With this in mind, it’s not too difficult to believe that he was the first to use Deus ex Machina in a play. And, since Euripides was often criticized for his ideas, it makes sense that he was the primary user of the concept out of the three great writers of tragedy.

Euripides used Deus ex Machina more frequently than any of the other tragedians, but he also used it in a different manner. He went beyond utilizing it to solve difficult plot issues. Instead, Euripides would use the Deus ex Machina to provide divine criticism, approval, dissaproval, and insight into mankind and its actions. Euripides brought in the gods and goddesses also to incorporate a religious and devotional aspect. By using the deities in this manner he emphasized the fact that man was subject to the gods who had ultimate control. Yet, even though they had such control, Euripides also referenced the imperfections that were famous among the Greek deities. By incorporating the vendettas, feuds, jealousies, and other imperfections amongst the gods and goddesses Euripides showed the connections between human mortals and the gods in addition to showing the ultimate control and power that the Greek deities possessed.

Some examples of Deus ex Machina in Euripides’ tragedies:

Medea- When Medea is shown in the chariot of the sun god Helios, the god himself isn’t present. From her vantage point in the chariot she watches the grieving Jason. It was thought that this particular scene would have been accomplished using the same mechane designed for a Deus ex Machina.

Hippolytus- In this play three deities are present: the jealous Aphrodite, Artemis the object of Hippolytus’ devotion, and vengeful Poseidon. However it is only Artemis who appears. She explains to Theseus that Hippolytus was innocent all along and that it was Aphrodite who had caused been manipulative and caused all the grief. Additionaly in this appearance, Artemis vows to destroy any man Aphrodite ever loves.

Andromache- At the end of this play, Thetis the sea goddess appears to Peleus. She comes to take Peleus back with her to her ocean home. The play ends with Peleus going with Thetis his wife, into the ocean.

Helen- In Helen, Theoclymenos becomes enraged when Helen and Menelaus trick him and run away together. As a result, he tries to murder his sister Theonoe for not telling him that Menelaus was not dead. The demi-gods Castor and Polydeuces, Helen’s brothers and sons of Zeus and Leda, appear miraculously to intervene.

Orestes- In Euripides’ Orestes, Apollo appears on stage to set everything in order. Apollo closes up all the loose ends by revealing that Helen had been put amongst the stars and therefore Menelaus should return to Sparta. He also orders Orestes to journey to Athens to stand trial in their court which will lead to his acquittal. Apollo also states that Orestes will marry Hermione and that Pylades and Electra will also marry.

The Deus ex Machina remains a popular plot device even today, being used in modern films, novels, and short stories. Though its definition has been broadened to accomodate the greater and different scope of its usage from ancient times, the main concept still exists. The Deus ex Machina has been existence at least as early as the fifth century BC. This convention swiftly became popular in early Greek theatre but it began as a revolutionary idea from the mind of Euripides one of the tragedy genres great innovators. Euripides may have been known for using unconventional ideas in his plays and he may have received a lot of criticism for it, but nonetheless the Deus ex Machina would still persist as one of oldest, useful, and popular plot devices.

Christianity

“Now this is eternal life: That they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.” John 17:3

Eternal life is more than just living forever. If eternal life was simply living forever God could let us do that right here on earth right now. Everyone is going to live forever somewhere – either in heaven with God or in hell separated from God. What exactly, then, is eternal life?

Eternal life is knowing God, being fully connected to God, being in God, and having God in you. It is worshipping God, obeying God, loving God, serving God, and glorifying God. And as believers we get eternal life now. John 17:3 doesn’t say, “The gift of God will be eternal life.” It says, “The gift of God is eternal life.” It isn’t something we wait to receive. You have eternal life the moment you trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. You aren’t just going to live forever…you are going to live forever with God. His home will be your home. His family is now your family. The Heavenly Father is now your Father.

There is only one remedy for sin and that is God. There is only one remedy for death and that is life.

Sin and death is the ultimate Deus Ex Machina. The only way out is by accepting the free gift of eternal life that God offers to every one of us. Yes, we deserve death; but God desires life.

Application: Have you allowed Christ to be your Deus Ex Machina? Your sin has created a problem that can only be solved by His grace. Have you trusted in Him?

Abstract: Wikipedia provided a lot of background information for this document. An article about Deus ex Machina talked about the history as well as the modern connotations of the phrase. Wikipedia also provided plot summaries of many of Euripides plays which easily displayed where the Deus ex Machina occured. It also provided the information on how the Deus ex Machina would be performed and where it originated. It also talked about the “mechane” device that was used to perform the Deus ex Machina.

Abstract: I used this article that I discovered on JSTOR and summarized for my first document. The article pertained heavily to my topic so I found it particularly useful. This article discusses the use of the deus ex machina in Greek Tragedy. Specifically, this article refers to Euripides use of the plot device since he was known for using the deus ex machina ten times more frequently in his works than in any of the other surviving works of other tragedians. The article specifies that Euripides didn’t use the deus ex machina to simply solve difficult plot issues. Instead, Euripides usually utilized the deus ex machina to provide divine criticism, approval, or disapproval of mankind and its actions. Bringing in the gods and goddesses, Euripides incorporated the religion in a very complete way. He made reference to vendettas and feuds amongst the gods as well as between gods and men.

At least 18 people were shot and three killed — including a 6-year-old boy — at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California, according to reports.

Police officials confirmed the number of deceased at a press conference late Sunday night local time. They said that the suspected gunman behind the 5:40 p.m. shooting had been killed as well.

“We have at least 15 people injured,” said Gilroy Police Capt. Scot Smithee. “Four fatalities, including the suspect.”

Sources told NBC Bay Area that 11 victims were taken to a local hospital by ambulance and helicopter, while the others were transported in a civilian vehicle.

The conditions of the people who survived ranged from critical to fair, according to hospital officials.

A 12-year-old girl was also among the victims who had been shot, in addition to the 6-year-old boy. She was reportedly hospitalized and treated for a bullet wound to her leg.

Relatives of the 6-year-old — identified by NBC as Stephen Romero — said he was among those killed. His mother was reportedly injured, along with several family members.

Police said Sunday night that they were still searching for “a second individual” possibly linked to the shooting.

“Some witnesses were reporting that there may have been a second suspect,” said Gilroy Police Capt. Scot Smithee at a press conference.

Photos tweeted out by local reporters showed officers in full tactical gear — scouring a creek with canine units and helicopters overhead.

Witnesses to the 5:40 p.m. shooting described the confusion and panic at the scene to the Mercury News.

Evenny Reyes of Gilroy, 13, told the newspaper that spent the day at the festival with her friends and relatives.

“We were just leaving and we saw a guy with a bandana wrapped around his leg because he got shot. And there were people on the ground, crying,” Reyes said. “There was a little kid hurt on the ground. People were throwing tables and cutting fences to get out.”

Reyes said that she didn’t run at first because the gunshots sounded like fireworks. “It started going for five minutes, maybe three. It was like the movies — everyone was crying, people were screaming.”

While a muscular guy, doesn’t seem to compare in size to say, Ronnie Coleman, body building champion:

enter image description here

I have asked other questions about building strength while not getting too big physically with an answer saying it is possible. So, what is the link between muscle size and strength?

While muscle strength and muscle mass do not have a direct one to one relationship, there is definitely a connection between the two. To understand exactly what that connection is, and how big a role it plays, it helps to have a little background on the fundamentals of muscle physiology…

Muscles are composed of connected bundles of muscle fibers, of which there are two kinds: slow-twitch and fast-twitch. Slow-twitch fibers are considered the endurance fibers, because they are very resistant to fatigue but cannot contract as quickly or as strong as their counterpart. Fast-twitch fibers are considered the strength or power fibers because they fatigue quickly but have explosive speed and power. Most muscles are a mix of both slow and fast-twitch fibers (which in turn are made up of protein bundles called myofibrils). The exact mixture of slow/fast is for the most part fixed at birth and varies depending on numerous factors including the muscle type and genetics.

Strength training will increase the size and quantity of myofibrils, and subsequently increase the size of the respective muscle fibers; this process is called hypertrophy, and it results in larger and stronger muscles.

With all of that physiology out of the way, let’s return our focus back to your original questions:

I’ve heard it often that the size of muscles, for example biceps, is not related to how strong someone is. Is this true?

Yes and no. As you noted, body builders tend to have much larger muscle mass while (for the most part) remaining considerably weaker than powerlifters; this has a lot to do with the types of exercises being performed, the way you define strength, and genetics. However, I wish to emphasize that a focus on building mass does not mean you are neglecting strength.

What is the link between muscle size and strength?

Muscle size and strength both come as a result of strength training through the process of hypertrophy. With any type of strength training exercise you will see increases in both size and strength, though to varying degrees depending on the muscle worked and the type of exercise.

Can a person gain muscle strength without gaining muscle mass?

Once again, the answer is yes and no. Strictly speaking, no you cannot because the very act of strength training causes hypertrophy which increases both the size and quantity of the myofibrils which in effect increases the size and strength of your muscle. Additionally, this once again depends on how you define strength, because in muscles there is a marked difference between strength and endurance, though both are equally valid metrics for measuring strength.

All that being said, there are ways you can largely focus on one versus the other, and it brings me back to issue of slow- and fast-twitch muscle fibers.

Training for strength

EDIT: There are two schools of thought for building muscle strength without mass.

The first school of thought, which I recommended earlier, focuses on doing endurance exercises which are low intensity with high repetition. You stick to the 13-20 rep range, as opposed to the 6-12 rep range which is most common in strength training. Doing this will increase both strength and mass, but with a focus on endurance.

The second school of thought revolves around doing very low volume of 1-5 reps such that you are toning and firming the muscle (via generating actin and myosin cross filaments), but you don’t stress the muscles so much that you trigger hypertrophy. I haven’t seen any studies on this and it directly contradicts what I’ve held as popular belief, so hopefully someone with more knowledge might be able to shed some light here.

*One final note: it is important that you consider the distinction between body mass and muscle mass. For instance, you could conceivably build muscle strength and muscle mass in your arms, all while reducing your arms overall mass by reducing excess fat. Just something to consider.

Hypertrophy is not the same as strength.

We can train differently to attain different results. Some forms of training build mass, others add strength, others improve endurance. A larger muscle is, all other things being equal, stronger than a smaller one. However, a smaller muscle can be more neurologically efficient and/or dense, and therefore be stronger than a larger muscle.

Rep Ranges

Doing fewer repetitions with heavier weights builds strength most effectively. Doing more repetitions (circa 4 to 12), with weight that is still challenging, builds mass most efficiently. Doing more than 12 repetitions in a single set is generally best for endurance as opposed to strength.

Wimps are ‘stronger than bodybuilders’, study finds

A gram of bodybuilders’ muscle is less powerful than the same amount of tissue from someone who did not weight train, tests show

Wimps might have the last laugh on gym-obsessed hunks – gram-for-gram, bodybuilders’ muscles are weaker than those of people who never touch weights, research has shown.

Scientists found that bodybuilders had extraordinarily large muscle fibres capable of generating forces far greater than normal for an average human.

Yet tests showed that a gram of their muscle was less powerful than the same amount of tissue from someone who did not weight train.

Lead scientist Professor Hans Degens, from Manchester Metropolitan University, said: ”Most of us are impressed by the enormous muscle bulk of bodybuilders and think that these people must be extremely strong, like the ‘Incredible Hulk’.

Individual muscle fibres were isolated and tested to see how fast and powerfully they contractedScientists have discovered shorter workouts can help dieters lose more weight than working out for a full hour  Photo: ALAMY

”The surprising thing, however, was that a gram of muscle from bodybuilders produced less force than that from non-bodybuilders, and it thus seems that the ‘muscle quality’ is less in bodybuilders.

”It appears that excessive muscle growth may have detrimental effects on the quality of the muscle, and one may well be better off with normal-sized muscles than with metabolically expensive large muscles.”

Bodybuilders are only strong because they have so much muscle mass – enough to compensate for the weakness of each gram, the research suggests.

Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch is one of the most complicated, endearing Avengers. First appearing as a villain, a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in early issues of X-Men, Wanda has been a member of the Avengers from nearly the very beginning, joining the team all the way back in issue #16.

Since then, she has had no shortage of ups and downs, from falling in love and marrying the Vision to having a breakdown that decimated the team.

While she’s not as popular as Iron Man or Captain America, Scarlet Witch has always been well known to fans for being a mainstay of the team, serving on several incarnations from the original title to West Coast Avengers and Uncanny Avengers as well.

Fans love her because of her complicated past, but also because she is without a doubt one of the most powerful people on the team.

Even now, fans aren’t sure exactly how powerful Scarlet Witch is, and even she herself does not seem to be sure of it.

Her powers are complicated and incredibly varied—they might even be almost limitless. Because of this, some of the applications of her abilities get lost in the shuffle so that some fans might forget or never even know about certain things that the Avenger is able to do.

With that in mind, here are the 16 Powers Only True Marvel Fans Know Scarlet Witch Has.

Captain America: Civil War - Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch

START NOW

16 SHE CAN SHORT CIRCUIT MACHINERY

Captain America: Civil War - Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch

Some of the most powerful enemies in Marvel comics are robotic in nature, or at least incredibly high-tech. From the mutant hunting Sentinels to the impenetrable Ultron, there are dozens of robotic foes making things miserable for everyone’s favorite heroes on a daily basis.

Due to his adamantium— or vibranium, if one follows the movies— body, Ultron can be one of the hardest villains for the Avengers to physically beat in a fight. He’s made of an indestructible metal and can’t always be taken down in simple combat.

However, Ultron has learned to fear Scarlet Witch over the years because his adamantium shell cannot repel her magic attacks.

She has best showcased this by getting her power into his system and short circuiting the machinery controlling him, in a way very similar to how the X-Men’s Kitty Pryde short circuits machinery when she phases through it.

15 SHE IS RESISTANT TO THE PHOENIX FORCE

Namor v Scarlet Witch

One of Scarlet Witch’s most jaw-droppingly powerful and incredible abilities is her power to stand up to the Phoenix Force.

As a key component to X-Men lore, the Phoenix Force is one of the most powerful entities in the known universe, if not even potentially the most powerful.

It has destroyed entire civilizations. When it partnered with the already extremely powerful Jean Grey, the Phoenix could have unmade existence.

When it targets a host, there’s little the host can do about it. The only person to even hold it at bay was Jean herself, but the Phoenix managed to take her over.

That has not proven to be the case with the Scarlet Witch. When the Phoenix Force turned its eye on her, Wanda proved to be completely resistant to it, which is a power very few characters have ever demonstrated.

This has led to the reinterpretation of Scarlet Witch’s powers as cosmic rather than demonic in origin.

14 SHE CAN CONTROL THE OUTCOME OF VARIOUS EVENTS

Scarlet Witch takes Jean Grey's powers to save Quicksilver

Scarlet Witch has many wide applications for her luck-based abilities. While she can control the outcome of events on a one-to-one basis, she can also control the outcomes of larger events as well.

Unfortunately for the Avengers but fortunately for readers, this aspect of her power is not the Deus Ex Machina that one might fear it could be.

She can’t use her power to always ensure that the Avengers are victorious, and even when she tries to affect a situation to her advantage, it takes a great deal of control that she does not always have.

Part of what leads to Scarlet Witch’s occasionally perceived lack of control is that she has so many wide and diverse powers that are so loosely defined.

It would take years for her to practice just her luck powers alone to begin to truly understand their potential.

13 SHE CAN CREATE REALITY DISTORTING ILLUSIONS

Captain America Dead in Avengers Age of Ultron

When Scarlet Witch was first introduced in X-Men #4, she served as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants alongside her brother and several other villains, including Mastermind.

His mutant power is to create illusions so authentic that a person will inherently believe them to be real. Mastermind later used these abilities to get into Jean Grey’s head over the course of a few years in order to effectively kick off the Dark Phoenix Saga.

The hilarious thing looking back on this now is that they didn’t even need Mastermind on the team because Scarlet Witch technically has the exact same power.

Scarlet Witch can create illusions that are incredibly realistic, sometimes without even realizing that she is doing it.

At the end of Avengers: Disassembeld, once the team realizes Wanda is behind the attack, they spend some time speculating how much of what they’ve just seen is actually real.

Their house is gone and their friends have passed away, but anything else— even creatures they’ve just fought— could have been an illusion. That’s an extremely dangerous level of power.

12 HER REALITY POWERS STEM FROM CHAOS MAGIC

Scarlet Witch Avengers Disassembled

As complicated as Scarlet Witch’s powers might be, the source of her powers is also just as complicated.

For most of her time in the comics, she was established to be a mutant. Recently, after her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that was established to not be true with the revelation that the High Evolutionary had altered both she and her brother genetically at birth.

However, she also has some magic abilities as well.

The explanation for her reality shaping powers has always been the ability to channel an internal chaos magic.

However, the source of chaos magic has changed over time, with the original explanation being that the demon Cthon had instilled her with this power at birth.

The most recent explanation has been that her chaos magic is actually cosmic in origin.

11 SHE TRAINED IN THE ACTUAL ART OF WITCHCRAFT UNDER AGATHA HARKNESS

Many fans do not realize that Scarlet Witch actually lives up to her name. When writer Steve Englehart took over, he decided to embrace that aspect of her title by actually having her study the art of witchcraft.

This new arc introduced her longtime mentor Agatha Harkness, a character who has become deeply tied to Scarlet Witch over time.

Scarlet Witch’s ability to channel chaos magic helped her to have a natural inclination toward magic as a whole.

As a witch, she has proven to be incredibly skilled. Sometime later, she would even be taken under the wing of the Marvel Universe’s sorcerer supreme, Doctor Strange.

It would be interesting to see if a similar dynamic between the characters will be at all present in Infinity War.

10 HER HEX POWERS CAN GIVE ENEMIES BAD LUCK

When originally created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, “hex powers” were the only abilities Scarlet Witch was established to have and even then the definition was not altogether clear.

It is revealed later on that her hex powers actually affect probability and that she can manipulate the outcomes of various events.

On a small scale, Scarlet Witch can affect the environment around her enemies to essentially give them bad luck.

Although she has a strong degree of telekinesis, she doesn’t always have to use it as she doesn’t want to.

Instead of dropping a ladder on someone’s head, she can manipulate the outcome by blasting enemies with her hex bolts so that they wind up dropping the ladder on their own head instead.

It’s her original comic book power and one that can still be among the most damaging when used properly.

SHE CAN CREATE BLASTS OF KINETIC ENERGY

Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch

Sometimes, for the dynamic action of a comic book, even the most powerful characters wind up shooting good, old-fashioned beams out of their hands.

Scarlet Witch’s hex bolts can be used to affect the luck of whatever she’s aiming at, but she can also sometimes a similar blast of energy to knock someone off of their feet.

These blasts do not appear to use heat and instead seem to work like the concussive blasts that shoot from Cyclops’s eyes.

They are blasts with, essentially, the power of an extremely strong punch.

While Scarlet Witch has displayed awesome feats of power during her time with the Avengers, these blasts often prove to be the most helpful in a fight.

They might not speak to her immense potential, but they’re great for clearing a room of enemies in an efficient way.

SHE HAS INCREDIBLY STRONG TELEKINESIS

Scarlet Witch v Captain America and She Hulk

When it was announced that Scarlet Witch would be making her way into the Avengers movies, many fans were curious as to how exactly her powers would translate to screen, especially given the fact that she was a mutant at the time in the comics.

Even after Age of Ultron and Infinity War, her powers have not been clearly explained except for the exposition that were given to her through experimentation with Loki’s scepter and the Infinity stone within it.

For the most part, aside from her ability to get into people’s heads and create illusions, Scarlet Witch’s powers on screen largely appear to be a form of telekinesis.

That’s only a fraction of her power, but it is an ability that she at least possesses in the comics. Her ability to move objects mixed with her control of chaos magic make her an extremely powerful and underrated telekinetic force.

SHE CAN TELEPORT ACROSS GREAT DISTANCES

Scarlet Witch

Certainly one of the most convenient abilities for the Avengers as a team, Scarlet Witch can teleport herself and others to virtually any place on the planet she can think of.

Although it’s not aggressive by nature, teleportation is one of the most useful powers in the Marvel Universe and Scarlet Witch is actually one of the few Avengers who is able to do it.

In fact, her skills are so strong in this area that she can even hop through dimensions and move through time itself.

When it’s believed that Scott Lang’s life is taken in Avengers: Disassembled, it’s actually revealed much later that Scarlet Witch’s future self teleported through time to save Scott from the devastation wreaked by her grief and transport him through time into her present day.

SHE CAN CANCEL OUT DOMINO’S GOOD LUCK POWERS

Another luck-based hero, Domino, will make her cinematic debut in Deadpool 2 this May. Given both of their history as mutants, Domino has had a few run-ins with Scarlet Witch in the past, and they have always been interesting.

Domino has the ability to affect the outcome of any situation to her advantage. She can’t create bad luck for others, but she is always influencing the environment in her favor, creating good luck for herself.

Very few things can throw this ability off, but Scarlet Witch is one of them.

Domino, as it turns out, is not immune to Scarlet Witch’s hex powers. When Scarlet Witch wants to throw Domino off with a hex bolt, the power will cancel Domino’s out so that her good luck powers wind up having no effect.

SHE CAN PROTECT AGAINST MAGIC ATTACKS

Doctor Strange Mentors Scarlet Witch

One of the benefits of her magical training is that Scarlet Witch showcases an incredible resistance to spells and other magic attacks.

Under the guidance of both Agatha Harkness and Doctor Strange, she has learned from the very best to protect herself from whatever magic-leaning threats might come her way.

As a talented spellcaster herself, she knows what incantations are best suited for protection and which ones break down too easily under pressure.

This talent, possibly above all others, showcases Wanda’s intimate knowledge of witchcraft in all of its forms.

Knowing how to protect herself from magic is key because it demonstrates an intimate knowledge of the supernatural world as well as the very nature of magic itself, as well as its raw power and the natural balance that it represents.

SHE IS ACTUALLY AN INCREDIBLY SKILLED PHYSICAL COMBATANT

Rogue kills Scarlet Witch in Uncanny Avengers

If there’s one thing about the Scarlet Witch that many fans probably don’t know about it’s that she is incredibly trained in physical combat as well as magic.

It’s a surprise to think about, given how powerful she is, but that’s also why it makes sense. The Avengers must be prepared for anything, as they’re thrown any amount of curveballs on a virtually monthly basis.

If Wanda loses her powers, she’s just an ordinary defenseless person, and that’s worth noting because Marvel characters tend to get depowered all the time.

To counteract this potential weakness, Scarlet Witch has been trained in several martial arts by Hawkeye.

With only his arrows to rely on, Hawkeye knows the importance of combat skills and his decision to share that knowledge with Scarlet Witch has proven to be useful on more than one occasion.

SHE IS A SKILLED TACTICIAN

Scarlet Witch and Force Works

Scarlet Witch has proven to be a force to be reckoned with in many, many ways over the years. She can affect probability, she can control and manipulate the environment around her, and she can cast spells and implant illusions into people’s minds.

However, her strongest power might still be her brain and the way she thinks.

Too many fans tend to think of Scarlet Witch as damaged, as someone who’s brain is too scattered or off-balance to even focus her own powers.

This simply is not the case. Scarlet Witch is incredibly strong willed and incredibly smart, thinking of combat situations in terms of strategy without letting her emotions dictate the outcome.

She is able to predict super villains and the moves they tend to make, partially thanks to having been one in the past.

 2. SHE CAN SHAPE REALITY ITSELF TO HER WILL

Scarlet Witch - No More Mutants

Scarlet Witch’s most undefined power is her most dangerous power as well. She can manipulate and even reshape reality.

She did this at one point during the events of Avengers: Disassembled when she inadvertently launched an all-out attack on Avengers Mansion.

Without a doubt the most famous use of this power has to be the way she reshaped the Marvel Universe during House of M.

Not only did she change the world on a fundamental level, she initially created a new reality, an alternate world in which most of the Marvel heroes got the dream lives they had always wanted.

Even after she was forced to dismantle that reality and restore the world, her change of that balance had lasting implications when it was revealed she had depowered almost every mutant in the world.

By simply saying the words “no more mutants,” Scarlet Witch stripped the powers from 99% of the mutant population. It’s still one of the most powerful displays of power in Marvel history.

SHE WAS BORN WITH COSMIC POWERS

High Evolutionary reveals Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's parentage

The origins of Scarlet Witch’s powers have always been rocky. They were initially explained away as simply part of her mutant powers.

Later, chaos magic was introduced. Then it was revealed that the demon Cthon had imbued her with chaos magic at birth and that her power was actually demonic in origin.

Later explanations of her power have radically redefined how her powers work and where they initially came from. Now it is well known that Scarlet Witch was never actually a mutant and was given her powers by the High Evolutionary.

This explanation has revealed that her powers due not stem from any demonic dimension but instead that they draw their strength from something cosmic, which once again expands the potential for her level of power and the many applications it could continue to have in the future.

Even after all this time, her abilities continue to grow, expand, and evolve.
